The Little Known Secret to Interviewing Successfully with Younger Managers

The odds are not in your favor.

It’s simply the laws of evolution. Not many 75 year old hiring managers around to hire a 61-year old.

So how do you get someone who is 15-20+ years younger to hire you?

You treat them like a person who has a job to do and is capable of doing that job.

Sounds crazy, right?

Well, maybe not so crazy.

Let me take you back to a time when you were 35 years old.

I don’t know about you, but when I was 35, I thought I was going to conquer the world and I had the plan to do so.

And I was pretty damn competent, so I had no doubt I was going to do it.

I hired people who I thought would do the job either the way I wanted it (with little training), or they were very trainable (where I can teach them how I wanted it done).

If someone came in telling me how they did it at their previous employer, how my way may not work and they would show me how to do it, if I hired them, I wasn’t particularly interested in hiring someone who was going to tell me what to do and not listen to me from the start.

While I was ‘open’ to other perspectives, in hindsight, I really wasn’t. I knew what I knew and how to do it, so I didn’t need any doubters or naysayers getting in my way…it didn’t matter if you were 25 or 65… If you weren’t on board with what I thought I needed, I moved on to the next applicant.

I know… I sounded like a peach back then, eh?

Well, do you think the 35 year olds now think much differently?

When you were 35, how many 61 year olds telling you they know better did you hire?


So why do we begrudge the current 35 year olds for thinking/feeling/acting the same way simply because we need a job at 45, 55 or 65+?
