The Myth Of The Summer Hiring Slowdown
Yes, hiring can slow somewhat during the summer because people take vacations and business schedules change. But hiring does not stop. If an executive role is open in June, July, or August, there is a real reason the company is trying to fill it. If you still have the energy to search, do not stop simply because you assume everyone has gone quiet.
Every summer, executives make the same assumption: hiring has slowed down, recruiters are away, and it makes more sense to restart the search in September.
That is the part I want you to challenge.
I am Lisa Rangel, Founder of Chameleon Resumes and a former search firm recruiter. Hiring may slow a little during the summer, but it is never zero. Companies are still hiring, recruiters are still working on searches, and executives are still landing jobs.
Should You Ever Take a Break From Your Job Search?
Absolutely.
This is where the advice gets misunderstood.
If you are fried, take the break.
A job search requires energy, judgment, preparation, and the ability to present yourself well. If you genuinely need time away, there is nothing strategic about forcing yourself through another week of half-hearted outreach.
But there is a difference between taking a break because you need one and taking the entire summer off because you believe nobody is hiring.
If you are rested, focused, and still have your momentum, keep going.
Could You Face Less Competition in the Summer?
Potentially, yes.
The same myth that convinces you to stop searching convinces other candidates to stop, too.
Some executives decide they will wait until after Labor Day. Others cut back dramatically on networking, recruiter outreach, and applications. That means an executive who stays active may be competing against a smaller pool of people who are actively pursuing the same opportunity.
That does not mean every summer opening will be easy to land. It means you should not remove yourself from consideration before the company has even had a chance to consider you.
The goal is not to search harder because it is summer. The goal is to avoid stopping for a reason that is not actually true.
Why Are Summer Executive Job Openings Worth Your Attention?
Think about what it takes for a company to run an executive search during the summer.
People are traveling. Decision-makers may be taking vacations. Calendars can be harder to coordinate. If a company could easily postpone a search until September, it might.
So when an executive position remains actively open during the summer, pay attention.
As I explain in the video, that can be a sign that the organization has a real position it needs to be filled. It is not a reason to assume the opportunity is less serious simply because of the season.
I have made this point about summer job searching before. During my recruiting career, some of the busiest periods were seasons job seekers assumed would be quiet, including summer and the holidays.

What Should Executives Do During a Summer Job Search?
Keep your search moving, even if the pace changes.
That can mean:
- Staying responsive when recruiters contact you.
- Continuing targeted outreach to companies and decision-makers.
- Keeping conversations with your network active.
- Pursuing summer openings that genuinely fit your background and goals.
- Making sure your resume, LinkedIn profile, and executive positioning are ready when an opportunity appears.
Summer can also be useful for groundwork. Chameleon Resumes has previously recommended using the season to sharpen your professional branding and marketing materials, pursue exploratory conversations, and take advantage of networking opportunities that may look different from the rest of the year.
The rule is simple: Do not confuse a slower calendar with a closed job market.
If you need a break, take it intentionally. If you are ready to go, keep going.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Hiring activity may slow due to vacations and scheduling, but companies will continue filling roles throughout the summer. Hiring is never zero, and an executive opening that remains active during the summer may represent a genuine, current hiring need.
