Feeling like you want to see what opportunity is out there in the marketplace? Not sure what to do to get it going or if you even want to look for a job? Well, start your own research tour. Learn about what you think you may want to do next. You do not need to start with your resume, if you do not know where you want to go yet. To help you get that direction, here are three things you can do today to begin assembling information to help you:
- Make a phone call to a trusted work colleague who you have not spoken with in over six months. Just see how they are doing. You do not need to tell them your intent—yet. This is to help you flex that muscle of connecting with the world again and getting out from under your computer keyboard, a much needed skill to do the job search. So getting one phone call under your belt typically leads to more.
- Register for job alerts on Indeed.com with key phases pertaining to the jobs/industries you are interested in pursuing. Start seeing what is out there and who is hiring. See who the players are in the hiring market place over the next month. You do not have to respond to anything if you do not want to—you are just surveying the landscape to determine options for your next move.
- Write down one company where you think you would like to work. Research on LinkedIn how you may be connected to people at that company. Aim to set up an exploratory conversation to learn about the company. You can use language related to your business function and suggest meeting in the spirit of networking—you do not need to mention a job search. Just go out and make a friend in your target company.
Go do it now.
